Maybe, we’ll do a fancy pants drink this weekend but since your boy Maximilian is so fucking far behind on posts we’re going to talk about the mucho simple Presbyterian.
Now a highball generally refers to any spirit mixed with a carbonated beverage but the most common version of the drink contains Scotch whiskey and carbonated water. If you add a little bit of ginger ale to the Scotch whiskey and carbonated water you’ve got yourself a Presbyterian.
I like the ginger ale and seltzer water combination because it cuts down sweetness but I prefer to mix the two carbonated beverages with bourbon or rye whiskey instead of scotch because I prefer those two types of whiskeys. My favorite brand of bourbon for a Presbyterian or any highball cocktail is Buffalo Trace whiskey which is a 90 proof bourbon that is produced in Frankfort, Kentucky. If you pay more than $25 a bottle for this stuff then you’re getting ripped off and it is an amazing value for it’s price point.
The last point I’ll make (and you’ve probably heard me make it before) if you can get to a Whole Foods or a good package store, use a better ginger ale than Canada Dry or Seagram’s which both use high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavorings. If possible pick up GUS’s dry ginger ale (I stated on my older blog that if God drank ginger ale he would drink GUS’s), Stirring’s or Boylan’s which all use cane sugar and natural ingredients.
The Presbyterian
3 oz rye, scotch or bourbon
club soda
ginger ale
Build over ice in a funky glass. Garnish with a lime wedge if you like.
