“We’re not indestructible, baby better get that straight……”
Really who can forget that line from Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out” featured in the movie Rocky4? Might this song have accompanied one of the greatest montages in movie history? Most of you know the story but let me tell it for those who don’t. In the fourth installment of the Rocky story the evil, communist, Russian Drago kills Rocky’s best friend Apollo Creed during a boxing match that Rocky begged the old, washed Apollo not to take partake in. In retrospect I wonder why Drago wasn’t brought up on murder charges. I mean the ref tried to stop the fight and Drago just tossed him aside and landed a blow to Apollo that killed him. I mean shouldn’t Drago be punished in some form?
Rocky being the great friend and fierce competitor that he is decides he wants to avenge Apollo’s death and fight the Russian in Russia. Rocky’s wife Adrienne is not happy to say the least, after all homeboy just ate Apollo’s lunch they were in the mess hall at Riker’s Island. Rocky tells her that he’s going to fight him anyway and slides into his black Lamborghini. Of course this song is playing while Rocky takes his drive and relives all the key moments from the first three movies. When you think about it, Adrienne was always telling this fucking guy he was going to lose and shouldn’t fight. You think that Rocky would have told her to shut the fuck at some point.
On the rare occasions that I do exercise (which I’ve doing a lot more of lately) this as well as a ton of other music from the Rocky movies are always on my Ipod play list. As a fun side note story one of my best friends from grammar school, Julian Tepper is Robert’s son. Robert came to my school one parent’s visiting day in 1st grade and when I asked him for his autograph he kind of just smiled and laughed. Julian and his brother Max started a rock band called Natural History and made some preety good songs, my favorites being ”Watch This House” and “People That I Meet“. I was recently sad to read that the band dismembered.
The more that I listen to this song the more I get just how true it is. In life there really is no easy way out or short cut home, everything’s a battle and you really have to give 100% to survive and even then it isn’t guaranteed.
Thank you Robert and Rocky. Enjoy! Oh also Julian if you get around to ever reading this give me a holler my man. It’s been too long.
