I found out about this spot through the wonderful midtown lunch website which has a ton of good information on where to eat cheap in midtown and a few other areas as well. To say this place is hole in the wall is quite an understatement. To say that it is a hole in the wall on the fourth floor of a shady walk up building in the diamond district is much more accurate. Once you do mission up the steep steps you’re in for a treat. The servers are really friendly and the daily specials vary. I’ve had carne asada (steak which comes with lentils, beets, onion, lettuce, cilantro and tomato) chicken with rice and one of the best shrimp ceviches that I’ve ever eaten. If you’re lucky your container will be filled with shrimp (it’s hit or miss) but what’s not hit or miss is the ice cold tomato based sauce flavored with tons of fresh clinatro, onions and garlic. It comes with a small container of steamed, fluffy white rice, a little cup of really hot orange sauce, a fresh lime wedge and some seasoned corn kernels. If you’re ever in the area check this place out. It’s kind of hard to locate and you might be a little skeeved but once you get there it will all be well worth it.
