I consider The Turnaround: A Long Awaited Drama by Marley Marl disciple K-Def and gangster rapper standout Larry-to be one of the most slept on albums of the mid to late 90′s. Heads might know of K-Def from various production for groups such as Da Youngsta’s and Lords Of The Underground but it is on this album where the New Jersey native really hits his stride and crafts an audio atmosphere that reaches near perfection. Larry-O could have fumbled the perfect lob thrown to him by K-Def but instead throws it down with a authority completing the alley oop. Larry- O raps with an eerie dead seriousness throughout the entire album perhaps no more so than on the ironic “All I Ask Of You” which is an incredible interpolation of Rapheal Saadiq’s “All I Ask Of You” from the soundtrack to the film “Higher Learning.” This is one of my favorite songs from the album because it’s something you can drive to or bop your head to on your Ipod but I seriously recommend checking out the entire project which features Nas, Capadonna, Ghostface Killah amongst others. In an era where so many promising acts dropped ill 12 inches and then faded into obscurity or put out a whack full length project, K-Def and Larry O really delivered something solid and a project that should not be forgotten any time soon. One.
